Manhattan

If you’re planning a New York City trip and are on a budget, you’re probably researching a few New York attractions and things to do in the city for cheap. NYC travel can be expensive, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do it on a budget. There are many places in New York you can visit for free or low cost, you just have to make sure that you do your homework before your trip. Here are some New York budget travel tips so you don’t have to break the bank into your NYC travel plans:

Look for Free Things to Do

NYC is one of the most expensive cities in the U.S. so to save a buck or two, you should research a few free things to do in the city and add them to your itinerary before you visit. A simple Google search will provide you with cool things to do that are free, including free concerts in Prospect Park, free nights at some of the cities best museums, and simply walking some of NYC’s most iconic sights like the Brooklyn Bridge. With so many free things to do in the city, you’ll be able to use your money doing other things like going on New York walking tours.

Cheap Accommodations

Staying in the city can get very expensive, but you can easily save on your accommodations if you know where to look. First, check out Airbnb to find budget-friendly listings. A bargain in NYC is about $100 a night for an apartment and even cheaper if you’re willing to stay at someone’s place. You can also opt for doing a flat swap on sites like HomeExchange or look for affordable hotel/hostels. Just be sure to stay away from Manhattan because that part of the city is expensive no matter what!

Metropolitan Museum of Art

Pay What You Want at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

Although it has a $25 entry fee, the prestigious Metropolitan Museum of Art located in Central Park doesn’t exactly require you to pay it. That’s just a "recommended" amount and you can actually pay what you want to get in to see amazing art from Monet and more iconic artists.

Some tours are totally free and Free Tours by Foot provides tourists with loads of free tours of both Brooklyn and Manhattan sightseeing and all you have to do is tip your tour guide. There are ghost walks, street-art tours and more and you’ll be able to get an insider’s look at the city without having to pay a fortune.

Times SquareLook for Discounts

Before you arrive in the city, look for discounts on things you’d like to do anyway you can. Look at discount sights like Groupon and Travelzoo for discounts on hotels, airfare, and attractions and then even look on there for discounts on Broadway shows, restaurants and more. Also, head over to the websites of certain attractions you’d like to visit to see if they offer any discounts on tickets if you purchase them online. You can save a lot of money as long as you do your homework on many things you’d like to see and do while in New York City.

Shop on a Discount

NYC is a great place for those who love to shop, but it can be expensive. If you’d like to pick up a few things while there look online for any sample sales and be sure to hit up some of the area’s clothing outlets. And, of course, you’ll want to hit up some of the city’s best thrift and vintage stores for some serious scores!
